Captioning without Software
This lesson will take you through a step-by-step process of captioning a video using a simple word processing program. To do this process, you will need to be using either QuickTime or RealMedia video.
For this process , there are three components.
- Video file
- Text file (which has the time codes and text of captions)
- SMIL file (which serves like a web page to connect the video and text files in the appropriate way)

Step 2: A Text file with Time Codes and Captions
The next step is to create the text files with your captions and the time codes which controls when they appear. In the sample file, test.en_US.qt.txt, you can replace the captions and time codes that are there. The directions below will show you how to edit the text to customize it for your project.

Once you have created your captions with the correct code, save it as a .txt file. You will insert the name of this file into the SMIL file in the next step.
