The Legislature and State Capitol Building
Access to Minnesota’s State Capitol and services is the responsibility of the Legislative Coordinating Commission which has done a phenomenal job in system improvements this past year.

Transportation

Airports & Airlines
MCDHH informed the Metro Airports Commission (MAC) that MSP Airport was out of compliance with existing state and federal laws, and was not yet in compliance with the new regulations issued this past year by the Dept. of Transportation. The deadline for compliance to these new regulations, which specifically state airports and airlines must provide equal access to information and effective communication to deaf and hard of hearing travelers, is May 13, 2009.

MAC and MSP Airport staff have since vowed to become the nation’s leading airport in providing accessible services to deaf and hard of hearing travelers. They continue to work collaboratively with MCDHH and the Airport Communication Access Advisory Group while making improvements and piloting various accessible service options before full implementation.

Regular updates will be provided in the coming months. The Airport Access Advisory Group is made up of members of Hearing Loss Association of America-MN Chapters, Minnesota Association of Deaf Citizens, Minnesota DeafBlind Association, and Minnesota Disability Law Center.

Public Buildings & Venues

Stadiums & Convention Centers
The rumors are true. Live-Captioning to be offered within the new Target TWINS Stadium and University of Minnesota Gopher’s Stadium! Thanks to the work of DHS-Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services staff, along with representatives from other Minnesota disability groups, as part of the advisory group providing on-going consultation to the contractors responsible for the construction of these new “accessible” stadiums.

An open house meeting is being planned for sometime in late spring so that members of the public can see and learn more about these new public access features. Stay tuned for updates and further announcements.
