Legislative Update
Published 05-26-2009
As of May 22, 2009 all bills carried by MCDHH have passed and been signed into law! The deaf, hard of hearing and deafblind community succeeded in being heard through active lobbying and participation in the legislative process. All other bills supported by MCDHH have also passed and been signed into law, except for the anti-bullying bill which today was vetoed by Governor Pawlenty.
Thanks to action by deaf, hard of hearing and deafblind Minnesotans:
- Deaf and hard of hearing school teachers and staff are once again driving Type III vehicles for transportation of students.
- Data about Minnesota’s deaf and hard of hearing student performance will be collected and reported.
- The State of Minnesota will be establishing standards and guidelines (based on 508 & WCAG 2.0) for its technology, websites, hardware and software so they become fully accessible for ALL visitors and employees.
- The Parent Guides program will now have the stable, on-going funding needed to continue on beyond 2010.
- Minnesota’s nonprofit organizations will NOT lose their tax-exempt status as long as they are able to provide reasonable justification if not able to fully satisfy 2,3 or 5 of the North Star Factors.
